VA Linux IPO sets record

The hype surrounding Linux reached new heights as the value of VA Linux rose more than eight-fold on the company’s first day of public ownership.

Initially priced at $30 a share, the company opened at $299 before closing at $250, a 733 percent gain for the session. That surpassed the previous first-day record gain of 606 percent by the Theglobe.com in November, 1998.

VA Linux sells systems running the freely available variant of the Unix operating system.
