America Online, Yahoo! and the Microsoft Network have won the Web portal wars, according to a new report by Forrester Research.
Figures show AOL leads all Web portals with more than 53 million unique visitors each month. Yahoo! follows in second place with a little more than 40 million, while MSN.com is a close third with 37.7 million visits.
Lycos, Disney’s GO Network, and Excite@Home finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, but with significant drops in traffic.
“The portal race is over,” said analyst Charlene Li of Forrester Research. “If these other portals are to survive, they really have to focus their direction.”
