Samsung Electronics has begun production of a highly integrated MP3 chip for portable audio players.
The IC packs a DSP, a microcontroller, and 128K of flash memory on a single die.
Samsung’s CalmRISC for Portable Audio Devices (C-PAD) operates on 76 milliwatts, which will enable batteries in players to last 27 percent longer than in typical MP3 devices, according to the company.
The C-PAD chip is expected to enter mass production by April, the company said.
