AMD, Intel wage desktop price war

Consumers soon can expect to pay less for PCs after rival chipmakers AMD and Intel slashed prices on their high-end desktop processor lines.

Cuts in the OEM cost of Intel’s Coppermine processors range from seven percent for its 750MHz chip (from $803 to $744) to a whopping 31 percent for its 550 MHz processor (from $348 to $241).

Meanwhile, AMD has reportedly dropped the OEM price of its now-entry-level 550 MHz Athlon chip from $317 to $217, the 750MHz Athlon from $819 to $585, and the top-of-the-line 800MHz Athlon from $1,154 to $790.
