Police in Norway have arrested a 16-year-old student in connection with a software program that breaks the encryption code on DVDs.
Jon Johansen was charged with breaking security to gain unauthorized access to data or software and copyright infringement.
Johansen helped create DeCSS, a program that cracks the security code in DVDs and allows people to view digital movies through unauthorized players, such as computers running the Linux operating system.
The motion picture industry has filed lawsuits in New York and California aimed at preventing the spread of the program on the Internet.
If convicted, Johansen could face up to three years in prison.
