A U.S. judge has issued a temporary restraining order blocking Canadian-based iCraveTV.com from transmitting copyrighted programming into the United States – including today’s Super Bowl NFL championship game.
Launched late last year, iCraveTV streams the programming of Canadian and U.S. television stations online without their permission.
The company argues that under Canadian law, their actions are entirely legal, as long as it doesn’t cut or insert its own commercials into the programming and pays copyright holders for their work. Major U.S. movie studios and TV networks, however, say the retransmission violates American law, calling it “one of the largest and most brazen thefts of intellectual property ever committed in the United States.”
