Web-based bank X.com has beefed up security procedures after word of a scam that may have netted online thieves nearly $10,000.
The bank came under scrutiny from a security group after a customer pointed out how easy it was to trick the service into stealing money from someone else’s account. Officials say customers were allowed to provide only a bank account number and routing number, printed at the bottom of every check, to transfer funds to their new account – a process that allowed them to easily withdraw money from other accounts.
X.com said while its funds are now secure, there might be more victims who haven’t yet noticed the fraudulent charges.
