`Northwood' to replace mobile Pentium III

Sources say Intel will replace its fastest mobile chip in 2001 with a new processor, code-named Northwood.

Based on the same 32-bit architecture as Intel’s next-generation Willamette desktop chip, Northwood will begin Intel’s transition to a 0.13-micron process.

Northwood’s sister chip – Willamette – is due to debut late this year for desktop machines. Willamette is expected to offer speeds as high as 1GHz.
