A day after Intel announced it was cutting chip prices, rival AMD dropped the price of its Athlon processors by as much as 29 percent.
The 800MHz Athlon fell from $849 to $599 – $47 less than Intel’s 800MHz Pentium III. The 750MHz version fell to $489, while remaining Athlons were reduced by as much as 25 percent.
AMD also cut the price of its low-end desktop K6-2 chip, including the 500MHz version, which fell 40 percent, from $153 to $93.
