Hewlett-Packard will ship the first PCs with 1GHz Pentium III processors later this month, company sources said.
If true, Intel would – at least temporarily – reclaim the chip speed title from rival AMD, whose 850MHz Athlon is the fastest chip currently available.
The two companies have engaged in a game of chip speed leap frog since AMD first released the Athlon last August.
Intel reportedly is still on track to release 866MHz and 933MHz versions of its PIII processor.
