Apple admits notebook data glitch

Apple Computer is working to repair a software glitch in its popular iBook and PowerBook notebooks that could lead to a critical loss of data.

The problem appears to be related to the software used to store the contents of memory when the notebook is placed in “suspend” mode.

In a document posted on its Web site, the company says that “in rare circumstances when available memory is low, putting an iBook or PowerBook (FireWire) to sleep with this feature enabled can cause some critical file system data to get overwritten.”
