Mobile phones and radios of the future could be updated without additional equipment or hardware, thanks to a wireless technology now under development.
Called software-defined radio, the technology would let a cellular phone download music or the latest cutting-edge services over the airwaves. It would also lets devices seek out pockets of the airwaves that are not being used locally and adapt to those frequencies.
The FCC is currently examining software-defined radio as a way to better manage the nation’s airwaves, but it could be several years before the technology is available to consumers.
