Report: Upgrades can damage Apple G3

Older, beige Apple G3s may include a component that can destroy upgraded processors, according to a report by MacWorld.

Systems with a Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) manufactured by Royal Technology do not appear to adapt properly to new processors, such as a fast G3 or a G4, the report said. The VRM, which controls the amount of power a Mac processor receives, winds up supplying far too much power, resulting in rapid and permanent damage to the new processor.
