Motorola and Nokia are working together to standardize a new wireless technology capable of handling voice and high-speed Internet access.
Dubbed 1Xtreme, the new Motorola technology would compete with Qualcomm’s High Date Rate, or HDR, technology. While both offer higher data rates to allow wireless carriers to deliver more and better Internet applications, HDR – unlike 1Xtreme – separates Internet traffic to a different channel.
Motorola and Nokia hope to have their new technology ready for commercial service in 2002.
