Feds to Microsoft: Sell Office?

Federal officials reportedly favor a forced divestiture of Microsoft’s Office software business to resolve the government’s antitrust case against the company.

Microsoft also would be subject to sweeping restrictions on its conduct for a limited time until the unit could be spun off and while any court appeal of the breakup is pending, sources said.

Microsoft’s Office software is the largest and most lucrative part of the Redmond, Washington-based company’s applications unit, which provides more than 40 percent of total revenue and a substantial share of its profits.
