Testing and sampling is underway on a new chip from Sun Microsystems aimed at delivering superior processing for multimedia.
Known as MAJC – short for Microprocessor Architecture for Java Computing – the chip’s multiprocessor technology will speed the performance of computing-intensive applications, including 3D graphics, video and speech recognition, company officials said.
With two processors running at 500MHz each, the MAJC 5200 – available later this year – will be able to run applications faster than Intel’s 1GHz chip, company officials said.
Sun has said that the MAJC chips could eventually include as many as 1,024 processors on the same chip.
