AMD strategy prevents Thunderbird upgrades

Current Athlon users hoping to upgrade their PCs to AMD’s upcoming Thunderbird processor may be out of luck.

Slated for release next month, the Thunderbird and its new packaging technology known as Socket A is incompatible with existing Athlon Slot A chip sets and motherboards.

However, AMD said it has no plans to make Slot A-compatible Thunderbird chips available to resellers, nor will it offer a “slocket” – hardware that would allow a Socket A Thunderbird chip to be plugged into a Slot A motherboard.
