Intel predicts a year of component scarcity

Intel’s president and CEO, Craig Barrett, says, “The semiconductor industry as a whole underinvested in 1998 and 1999.” Furthermore, he forecasts, “I’d expect some shortage of components for the next 12 months or so.” The announcement was credited by some analysts for the rebound in microchip makers’ stocks last Thursday. Barrett also said that Intel will not “abandon” the personal computer chip market.
