US House votes to repeal Net access tax passed in 1898

In a 420 to 2 vote, the house has decided to repeal an access charge on telephones passed to pay for the Spanish-American War. The charge, a 3 percent federal excise tax on telephone lines enacted when there were less than 1,500 households with phones in the USA, amounts to about $24 per user per year. The Senate is expected to pass the bill and President Clinton, while not supporting the tax repeal, has not threatened a veto.
