Intel backs off 800MHz Xeon

According to a ZDNet reporter, Compaq has led a successful effort by leading computer manufacturers to force Intel to abandon plans to release a high-end, 800MHz Pentium III Xeon processor. Reportedly, manufacturers were unhappy with the chip maker’s efforts to force upgrades that make old systems obsolete without significant gains in performance. An Intel spokesman said, “We’ve basically learned from the OEMs that in the server market segment, they need longer lead times for tuning and qualification.”
