AOL/Netscape sued for privacy violations

Attorneys have filed a class action suit against AOL’s subsidiary Netscape because, they say, Netscape’s SmartDownload software illegally spies on users’ Web activities. The suit maintains that SmartDownload, normally installed when downloading the Netscape browser, is automatically activated whenever a user downloads any file from the Web and gives to AOL/Netscape the name, type and source of executable and ZIP files that users download. AOL has not yet commented on the charges.
