IBM supercomputer to be sold commercially

IBM has announced that versions of “ASCI White”, the classified supercomputer capable of scaling more than 8,100 microprocessors and was sold to the U.S. Department of Energy for $110 million, will soon be offered for commercial sales.

The RS/6000 SP system offers a potential maximum horsepower of 12.3 teraflops, or 12.3 trillion floating operations per second. Company officials said each the system’s nodes contains 16 Power 3-II microprocessors with copper interconnects running at 375MHz, essentially doubling the computing density of previous generations of systems.
