Cyrix beefs up Samuel for Celeron showdown

Chip maker VIA Cyrix has announced plans to release a 1GHz version of its Samuel 2 chip to compete with Intel’s rival Celeron processor.

The chip will launch at between 733 and 800MHz in the fourth quarter of this year, followed by a 1GHz version, a company spokesman said.

Designed for notebooks and low-cost desktop PCs, the first Samuel 2s will be made using a 0.15 micron process, feature 128K L1 cache and 64K L2, and run at 133MHz, 100MHz and 66MHz front-side bus.
