IBM says it will release a server, code-named Regatta, next year that will double its current Unix server performance levels. The machine, which can run on either Unix or Linux, is designed to compete with high-end servers from Sun and Hewlett-Packard. It will utilize the multiple processor Power4 chip, the clustering technology used by supercomputers to link separate systems, and a memory technology bought from Sequent Computer Systems last year that uses memory local to each processor to speed processing. The Power4 chip will use copper wire and chip-insulation technologies to increase computing speed.
