Intel, Rambus consider RDRAM revamp

Worried about resistance to the high cost of Rambus DRAM, Intel Corp. and Rambus Inc. are talking with memory sellers about redesigning the RDRAM core, reducing the number of banks to shrink the chip size and manufacturing costs. The changes, called the 4i initiative, would come at the cost of slower random access and will require new memory controller design. Rambus insists, however, that the new design will retain performance advantages over standard SDRAM.
