Bruce Schneier’s text, Applied Cryptography, is one of the most important books in the history of the Internet, having taught a generation of programmers the basics of cryptography. Schneier’s new book, however, is a departure from his earlier work for several reasons, the most notable being his insistence that cryptography cannot, by itself, provide Internet security. Schneier is particularly annoyed at those who market security products as guarantees of security and has changed his focus from eliminating threats to managing them.
