AMD releases 750 MHz Duron

Advanced Micro Devices is now selling a 750-MHz Duron processor, a favorite among those building their own systems because of its high performance-to-price ratio, at $181 each in 1,000-piece quantities. The chip reportedly features an Athlon-based architecture with 192 kBytes of total on-chip cache, a high-speed 200MHz front-side bus, and a superscalar floating point unit. According to analysts, AMD has not aggressively marketed the chip because its performance so closely rivals the more expensive Athlon chips the company would prefer to sell. Major computer vendors will begin selling machines using the chips within a few weeks.
