Cameras coming to cell phones

The race is on among CMOS imaging device manufacturers to develop camera modules that will fit the unofficial standards being developed by cell phone makers. Analysts predict that, by 2004, as many as half of all cell phones will contain cameras. The first will hit the market within a year. STMicroelectronics, Agilent, Hyundai, Toshiba, Sharp and Kodak-Motorola are among those developing modules containing lens, sensor and processor that measure less than a cubic centimeter. The tiny cameras will need to support both still and video images of VGA quality while costing less than $10.
