Via enters notebook chip market

Taiwan’s Via Technologies has announced a low-cost Cyrix III mobile chip line designed, according to the company, to extend battery life up to 50 percent. Versions of the x86-compatible line run at 500 to 600-MHz. Via’s power-management technology, “LongHaul,” uses hardware and software to run the processor at different voltages and frequencies when plugged in and when operating on battery power. The chip will cost about $55.
