Silicon Valley losing tech lead?

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. reported both record-breaking sales and earnings for the third quarter of 2000, confirming the company’s recent successes against the traditional Goliath of the chip business, Intel. Despite posting its first profitable year since 1995, the company’s stock price mirrored investor concerns over statements that AMD could not keep up with demand for its product during the last quarter of the year.

In related news, the Microprocessor Forum, attended by representatives of many chip companies that have lived for years in the shadow of Intel, has been a forum of another sort. The company’s competitors used the gathering as an opportunity to direct a few jibes at their long-time competitor, based on the Intel’s missteps during the past year.
