As reported by The Register, Simon Singh’s “The Code Book” reveals that a public/private key encryption scheme like that patented by RSA Data Securities, estimated to be worth several $billions today, was developed by the legendary British cryptographers at GCHQ. The technology was not, however, patented because it came out of a secret agency and the economic potential of the process was not foreseen. Public/private key encryption is a central and necessary component of e-commerce.
