IBM Corp. and the Scottish Kymata Ltd., are cooperating to use complementary technologies to produce what they say will be the smallest, and therefore the most cost-effective, optical networking chips yet. Kymata will use IBM’s pump laser technology and silicon oxynitride (SiON) core waveguide layer technology to produce more adaptable and smaller optical switching devices needed in the rapidly expanding optical network market. IBM says the process will produce chips as much as five times smaller than competing technologies.
