Sony Computer Entertainment Europe asked the European Commission to classify the PlayStation 2 as a computer, in a effort to avoid a 2 percent import tax. When the request was rejected by EC customs, Sony officials vowed to take the matter to court. Moreover, company officials have subsequently told Computer and Video Games magazine that the company will add an open source BASIC program to the European PS2 as well as a virtual keyboard with the option of plugging a hardware keyboard to the USB port. Users will be able to save programs created with YABASIC (Yet Another BASIC) onto memory card. YABASIC will be included on the demo disc in Europe.
