The breakthrough server “design win” that Advanced Micro Devices has been seeking may happen next week. According to various chip suppliers who sell to Sun Microsystems, the Athlon microprocessor has been chosen for use in Sun’s low-end Cobalt Internet servers. No one from either company would confirm the rumors. Though other chipmakers sell microprocessors that could also be used in the servers, some expect Sun to bolster the number two chipmaker, AMD, against their shared rival, Intel.
