Microsoft Corp. has admitted its own Web technicians were responsible for the blockage of its major Web sites for almost 24 hours. A “router configuration error” blocked requests for access to some of its most popular Web sites including HotMail.com, Microsoft.com, MSN.com, WindowsMedia.com, Encarta.com, Carpoint.com and Expedia.com. Early speculation by the company included the possibility that the problem was due to an attack.
Microsoft’s Web sites rank three on the list of most-visited destinations, behind America Online and Yahoo. The timing was ironic as it came just after the company launched its $200 million advertising campaign themed “software for the agile business.”
