Eighteen months late, Compaq Computer’s new 833MHz Alpha 21264 server chip has been released to the full commercial market. Early runs were given to select customers including biotech companies.
Compaq got the processor in 1998 when it bought Digital and, despite great technical reviews and a cult-like following, the chip failed to find a significant market. Recently, however, sales have improved, especially in the supercomputer arena. A 1GHz version is sampling right now.
