The Register reports that Advanced Micro Devices is tentatively planning across-the-board price cuts for both Athlon and Duron chips next month on March 5, one day after Intel Corp. lowers its chip prices. However, the article quotes an e-mail sent to the Intel retail channel that reads, “This is merely a warning. AMD has not yet committed to this date and can at anytime move it to an earlier or later date. During the next two weeks please do not stock your processor inventory at high levels.”
The same e-mail urges AMD retailers to take advantage of the new low pricing once it occurs. The Register speculates that the cuts may be in preparation for the release of the 1.3GHz Athlon, as at least one UK retailer is already taking orders for the chip.
