While publicly taking a nonchalant attitude toward the file-sharing service Gnutella, the Recording Industry Association of America has been talking to Internet security firms with an eye to shutting down services that lack a centralized server. As hit songs disappear from Napster’s lists of available music, users are turning increasingly to Gnutella, LimeWire and other services. Sources believe that these file-sharing services’ vulnerability may be that only 1 percent of the users reportedly host most of the available music.
