Combining biotech and nanotech in new chips

In what will be the first attempt to commercialize a technology that combines biotechnology and nanotechnology, Matsushita Electric , Osaka University and the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research are set to jointly develop an advanced electronic element, Nikkei reports.

Going beyond 90-nanometer fabrication, current semiconductor processes are close to reaching their limits using existing technology. The partners hope the introduction of completely new technology will help them achieve a design rule of just several nanometers, planning, for example, to apply the phenomenon of living things to create small structures or use protein and DNA in their research.
