A metal lighter than a feather

Boeing has invented a metal that is 99.99% air. Scientists say the microlattice metal is the world’s lightest material.

To get technical, microlattice is a 3D open-cellular polymer structure made out of small hollow metallic tubes, and represents a criss-cross diagonal pattern with small open spaces.

As expected, the airplane manufacturer was primarily looking for a method to optimize their airplanes, but the microlattice metal’s unique properties could be useful in numerous other industries.

Boeing has released a video, showing us what the new metal can do.
