Atomic Trampoline May Calm Jumpy Transistors

A nanometer-sized “trampoline” may help computer scientists understand how flowing electrons occasionally can generate enough heat to set a laptop computer on fire. It also may have implications for futuristic quantum computers. Suspended over a semiconductor cavity, the tiny trampoline “bounces” individual electrons, say its inventors.
